Getting Close to Nothing: An Indiepop / Riot Grrrl video fanzine from 1994

As the nineties arrived, the C86 sound began to evolve. The younger bands tended to get tougher and more radical in their political and sexual issues.

In 1994, I bought a video fanzine (limited edition of 300), I think I should share with you. It is a fair picture of the Riot Grrrl first years.

The tracks:
• Blood Sausage: F*** You and Your Underground
• Huggy Bear: No Sleep Till
• Mambo Taxi: Belgium Blues
• Cornershop: Waterlogged
• Huggy Bear: Her Jazz
• Tobi / Kathi: Safety First
• Bikini Kill: Rebel Girl
• Cornershop: Gimmie Change
• Mambo Taxi: Poems on the Underground
• Sister George: Virus Envy
• Voodoo Queens: Indian Film Star
• Huggy Bear: Pansy Twist
• Bikini Kill: This is Not a Test
• Bikini Kill: Don’t Need You
• Mambo Taxi: Serial Killer
• Huggy Bear: Single Bullets
• Blood Sausage: What Law Am I Breaking Now
• Bikini Kill: Suck My Left One
• Voodoo Queens: Voodoo Beat
• Cornershop: England’s Dreaming
• Huggy Bear: Teen Tighterns
• Sister George: Sister George
• Mambo Taxi: Do You Always Dress Like That…
• Huggy Bear: February 14th

Brompton Cocktail live at the Onion Cellar – 3 November 1986

I had the privilege to play at the Onion Cellar with Brompton Cocktail, opening for the Close Lobsters. In all fairness, I must admit that the reception was rather cold…. Almost everybody hated us. You may judge for yourself by the lack of applauses 😉

At the time, we were heavily influenced by The Cramps, The Rezillos, B movies and Hammer films. I gess this trad rock universe didn’t mix happily with the C86 crowd.

On the same night, The Catburgers and The Close Lobsters played great sets, so it was a fairly enjoyable evening.

Our drummer was Fritz Van Helsing of many bands, our singer was Pip Boydell, both now sadly passed on. Our guitarist was Michael G Jackson. I played bass.

But what is a Brompton Cocktail may you ask?
It is an oral mixture of morphine and cocaine helping patients in agony with advanced disease, named after the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, England, where the formulation of this mixture was standardized in the late 1920s for patients with cancer.

Weren’t we naughty at the time? We were young(ish), foolish, and we had a great time!

Hope you’ll enjoy our set, so many years later 😉

Note: The photographs were taken in and around our rehearsal room in Niddry Street (Edinburgh).

Set list:
• James Bond
• Shape of Things to Come
• Sally
• King Rat
• Monster Movies
• City of Nightmares
• Do the Scorpion
• Downtown
• Girl from America
• Let’s all Sin
• Everybody wants to be a Cat
• Slither

The Hook ’n’ Pull Gang – Studio & Janice Long Session

The Hook ‘n’ Pull Gang were described as “a cross between the Sex Pistols and the Ronettes.” They were always a joy to see live. They only released one 7 inch (“Gasoline” / “Pour it Down Yer Throat”) and unfortunately saved some of their strongest songs for later releases that never materialized.

Here are a few demos and tracks recorded for a Janice Long session.

The line up at this time was Eileen McMullan (drums/vocals), Rita Blazyca (guitar/vocals) and Alan McDade (bass).

Tracks:
• Gasoline
• Gonna be Strong
• Burke N’Hare
• Revenge of Al Green
• Pour it Down Yer Throat
• The Ride
• Lick the Pavement
• Footsie Love

The BMX Bandits live at the Onion Cellar - 1 September 1986

The BMX Bandits were definitely one of my favourite bands from the C86 scene, so funny and touching at the same time. They played another great gig at the Onion Cellar) on the first of September 😉

Luckily, I brought my tape recorder and my camera with me. Here is the result, complete with audience participation.

Set list:

A day like any other - Back in Niddry Street

Back in 1986, when I was far younger and still had hair, I acted in a short movie as part of a super 8 workshop… and yes, it is quite embarrassing!

It was filmed partly inside the Bannermans pub, partly in Niddry Street, outside and inside the rehearsal rooms building. A few weeks later, I found myself rehearsing in the same building with Brompton Cocktail but on the first floor if my memory does not fail me.

Since no one seemed to be interested in the outcome of our day’s work, I kept the film that I never saw again until now.

I finally got around to having it digitized it and left it as it was.

Since the film was mute, I added two great Beeville Hive V songs as soundtrack (I Can Tell and Sometime Ago).

I hope you will enjoy this wee time capsule 😉

Just another night at the Onion Cellar

I just found in a drawer this long lost and forgotten picture and - guess what - I quite like it ;-)

Note: A Vulture is in this photograph. Can you spot her?

The Beeville Hive V – Demos

Angus McPake and Lenny Helsing were tireless busy bees in mid-80 Edinburgh. It seemed to me that between them, they were part of a good half of the local scene. Judge for yourself!

Angus McPake played in Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes, The Fizzbombs, The Househunters (at least on stage) and The Thanes.

Lenny Helsing played in The Green Telescope, The Stayrcase, The Offhooks and The Thanes (with Angus).

And here, I’m just speaking of the bands I had the chance to see live at the time and I may have even forgotten about a couple of them.

Their common musical adventures date back to the Rubber Dolfinarium which had already split when I arrived in Scotland. The Beeville Hive V may have been their second band together. It was a great garage punk band that I really loved to see live!

To my knowledge, their only officially released track was the deliciously primitive “Beer, beer, beer” on the “Raw Cuts Volume Seven - UK Garage Disease” compilation.

Here are a few long lost demos from this legendary band 😉

Tracks:
• Stormy
• Not In Vain
• 2 Million Years Ago
• Complication
• Hearin’ Lies
• I Can Tell
• Beer (Beer, Beer)
• Sometime Ago
• One Day Girl

The Green Telescope – Live at Alice in Wonderland (London) – 1985

The Green Telescope were an amazing garage/psych mid-eighties band from Edinburgh, Scotland. They released two 45s, The “Two by Two” EP and “Face in a Crowd” single and participated to the “The Waking Dream” and “Beyond The Wildwood - A Tribute To Syd Barrett” compilations.

Lenny Helsing was on guitar and vocals, Alan McLeanon on bass, Bruce Lyall on organ and Gavin Henderson on drums which was replaced by Mal Kergan.

They later changed their name to The Thanes of Cawdor then The Thanes and are still active to this day under that name.

Tracks:
• Do like me
• O those eyes
• We sell souls
• Ain’t no clouds
• If treat me bad again
• Turnin’ out
• A Pindaric ode

Below are a few photographs taken on that very night. Many thanks to Angus McPake for those!

Another Pretty face – Demos, live tracks etc

Another Pretty Face were a band from Edinburgh. Formed in 1976, the band consisted of Mike Scott (guitar, vocals), John Caldwell (guitar), Jim Geddes (bass), and "Crigg" (drums).

The band released a small batch of singles, and one album - I'm Sorry That I Beat You I'm Sorry That I Screamed But For A Moment There I Really Lost Control - available only on cassette.

Another Pretty Face eventually changed its name and some of its personnel, before Scott left the band and went on to form the Waterboys.

Stephen McLaughlin (aka ‘Chic’), who replaced Crigg on drums, is in the photo second left. He also played in the Cubs and replaced Calumn Mackay as drummer in the Scars

• A Picture of Dorian Gray
• I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives
• Painter Man
• Someone To Share My Life With
• Part Time Punks
• David Hockney's Diaries / Medley
• Wouldn't It Be Good [Nik Kershaw]
• Anarchy In The UK [Sex Pistols]
• She Loves You [The Beatles]
• Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun [Pink Floyd]

• Helter Skelter [The Beatles]
• Don't You Want Me [Human League]
• You Think You're A Man [Divine]
• High Energy [Evelyn Thomas]
• Away From The Numbers [The Jam]

Note: The medley is unusual in that it passes through the typical 'classic rock' territory and playfully includes snatches of then contemporary chart hits.

At the end of the recognised covers, the music continues with Dan's amusing lyrics sounding half-improvised.

These are reproduced in full here:

“Boys and girls go home to bed
Listen to what your mother said
I love you, you love me
Why am I so unhappy?
God helps those who help themselves
So help yourselves from the shelves
I say my prayers I say amen
I wish that we were Echo and the Bunnymen
Aren't they cool? Yeah
And Frankie Goes to Hollywood
I wish I could
And if I could I'd sit on your bed
I'd watch your TV
I'd sit on your knee
You could fondle me for a moderate fee
She asked me if she could paint me nude
I thought that was a little bit rude
I often see her taking her Alsatian for a walk
She's a funny girl she's teaching it how to talk
And I'm a boy and you're a girl
So let's go to bed
I look in a mirror and what do I see?
Beautiful me
Most of all I want to be in David Hockney diaries
Most of all I want to be in Howard Jones's diary
I'd be as happy as could be”

Many thanks to Michael Conway for this information.

Here are his recollection of that day.

1984 - An introduction to the Television Personalities... Echo and the Bunnymen. Frankie goes to Hollywood. 'The Tube' on a Friday night. 1984 was a good year to be a seventeen-year-old shipyard apprentice. As the world's greatest Jam fan losing interest in the Style Council, something hit me on Sunday, 22nd July 1984. Sure, I passed my crash-course in cool sixties music like The Action, John's Children, The Creation and The Birds courtesy of older friends, but what I saw that Sunday evening blew me away.

I was encouraged by friends to turn up at the Janey's venue at The Bay Hotel, Gourock that evening. I had no idea what was in store. Previously someone taped me 'Part Time Punks' and 'Geoffrey Ingram' - that was all I'd heard. I hadn't even paid much attention to those tracks, dismissing them as 'jokey'.

The three figures appeared on the platform (not a stage). First impressions were that Dan was the shy one, Jowe the funny one and Jeff the quiet one. Dan looked good strumming his Vox Teardrop guitar. The opening comment went as follows "We'd like to play a selection of jazz numbers for you ...this is a jazz one!"

They played ten songs that evening, opening with the amazing 'Silly Things Lovers Do' (which I've never been able to track down).

The TVPs chatted with and gently poked fun at their audience. Painter Man - "this is an old Boney M song!", "...we'd like to carry on with an old Nik Kershaw song now!" or "This is our last number one hit single!". I think Dan must have been surprised at the age profile "You're all very young, aren't you!". Or providing many camp comments like "This is for ex-wife ...or ex-boyfriend" and "...so many girls here".

The set list was as follows:

o Silly Things Lovers Do
o Three Wishes
o Silly Girl
o Miracles Take Longer
o A Picture of Dorian Gray
o I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives
o Painter Man
o Someone to Share My Life With
o Part Time Punks
o David Hockney's Diaries

Looking back, I feel that is the best collection of tracks the TVPs could ever have played live, so it ranks as my very favourite TVPs live show.

From the cool 'Picture of Dorian Gray' to the emotional 'Miracles Take Longer' and 'Someone To Share My Life With' I instantly took a liking to TVPs on first sight back in 1984. They upgraded (at that time) 'Part Time Punks' to include references to the Dead Kennedys, The Smiths (..."they've got £3.50 - to go and see The Smiths ...tonight - here they come..."), New Model Army and Anti-Pasti (sounds more than a little dated now!)

The best came last. 'David Hockney's Diaries' I had never heard before. Cutting and pasting lyrics from about 101 cool (and some not so cool) songs together was something I'd never heard before. I was fascinated to hear bits of The Who, Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Sex Pistols, Jonathan Richman and Them laced into a wonderful medley. All in all, I had a great night, my first night as a seventeen-year-old fan of the Television Personalities.

I raced home to tell everyone what they'd missed!

(with sincere thanks to Davy Ritchie for a lifetime of musical inspiration)

The Vultures third gig - 26 February 1987

The Vultures are "criminally overlooked garage trash", wrote Sam Knee in his essential book, "A scene in between". I can only agree with his statement.

They played their third gig on the 26th of February 1987. They were on fire and so were we!

That night, the set list was:

• What I say (broken string)

• What I say

• Money

• Sad songs

• Something new

• Jack the ripper

• Good thing

Scars early demos

Let's go back in time with the Scars, one of the best post-punk Scottish bands. Here are a few demos a friend gave me years ago. The sound quality is unfortunately less than perfect but these are historical documents.

Scars were a Scottish post-punk band from Edinburgh from the late 1970s and early 1980s.

They issued a few great singles ("Horrorshow"/"Adult/ery", "They Came and Took Her"/"Romance By Mail", "Love Song"/"Psychomodo", "All About You"/"Author! Author!") and one album (“Author! Author!”).

The tracklisting:

• The Victim

• White Rockers

• Bedsit Boredom

• Antifeelings

• Chicks

• Shoplifter

• Unbecoming

The Onion Cellar Experience - Live compilation 1986 - 1987

If you want to enjoy an immersive Onion Cellar experience, here is a live compilation of 27 tracks handpicked by Dave Spalding in the gigs he recorded at the time. I’ll let him have his say:

"I met Stuart at the Television Personalities gig at Moray House in 1985. He was an old school friend who I hadn't seen for ages. We had both discovered the TVP's independently and become fans. The majority of the crowd at the Moray House gig did not know who the TVP's were so they did not go down particularly well. In fact during the encore two drunken guys got up on stage and stripped off which was a bit surreal.

Anyway Stuart told me he was putting on the TVP's at The Place underneath Nicky Tam's a couple of days later. I assume Jeff and Linda were also involved at this stage. They may have put on some gigs previous to this but this is the first one I attended. The crowd was much smaller at this gig but it was a much better atmosphere as in this case the majority of the crowd were fans. Although this was at the same venue it was pre-Onion Cellar. Similarly there were gigs by The June Brides, The Pastels and The Soup Dragons which they put on at the same venue which were still pre-Onion Cellar. Going to all these gigs I got roped in to help out.

By the time the Onion Cellar started there were actually 6 of us with myself, Euan and another younger guy (whose name escapes me) joining. What I do remember about this other guy is that he had access to an early portable video recorder and recorded some of the gigs. I never saw any of the footage but it is possible that it still exists out there somewhere. I can remember creating the backdrop in a park behind the flat which Stuart, Jeff and Linda shared. We got a large white sheet and covered it with spray paint so it looked psychedelic, in our eyes at least. This can be seen in some of the great photos included on the Onion Cellar facebook page.

Some of the bands refused to play with our creation behind them, Primal Scream being one that springs to mind. I think it eventually fell apart. Anyway although these were exciting times the crowds we were able to attract were not large. This meant that by the time we had paid for the bands, PA and hire of the venue there was usually a deficit which the 6 off us had to cover. I soon realised that it worked out cheaper just to pay on the door with the added advantage of not having to set all the gear up before the gig and take it all down again after, so I left and became just a paying customer. This probably didn't go down too well with the rest of them but it did mean that I didn't have to go every week and now only went when there was a band I wanted to see playing, which was still most weeks. I can't remember exactly when I left but I do remember the only time we broke even when I was involved was when Primal Scream played.

After running for about a year between 1986 and 1987 the Onion Cellar transformed into Speed 3 eventually moving to The Venue which had a larger capacity. Other memories from this period include driving the hired transit van through to Greenock to see the TVP's which some of you may have been in the back off. Also it was my hat that Angus wore when he stood in for the absent Dan Treacy, I still have it somewhere.

Anyway I used to record gigs back in these days and did record a lot of these events. Some of these recordings have not survived either being taped over at the time or lost in the preceding years but I do still have a few. I have compiled a CD (I'm still old school) from these, with the tracks running in chronological order, which will hopefully bring back some happy memories for you whether you were on the stage or in the audience."

The tracks on this compilation are:

01. Television Personalities - Part Time Punks 17-07-86*

The In Crowd at the Onion Cellar

The Onion Cellar atmosphere during my stay in Edinburgh (1986 / 1987) was great: girls and boys on stage, musicians and music lovers in the public.

We often saw the same faces on and offstage from week to week. It was kind of a family. We regularly met without knowing our addresses or phone numbers, we simply knew we would very probably meet again at the next indie gig.
